The Craze City field guide / 03

Drifting games with touch controls: what feels good?

For mobile drifting, look for a clear connection between steering, starting a slide and recovering grip. A game should let you understand why the rear of the vehicle moves and how to straighten it again. Tyre smoke looks dramatic, but it does not tell you whether the controls support a repeatable drift.

Separate the slide from the visual effect

A drifting game needs more than smoke when a vehicle turns. Watch whether the driver controls the angle and exit of the slide. Can they hold a curve, adjust the line and recover without an automatic reset? Those actions reveal the handling more clearly than a montage of sideways cars.

If you are new to the mechanic, find footage of a slow practice corner. High-speed clips can hide small corrections. A readable introduction should show what starts the drift and what ends it. You should not have to infer essential controls from a score counter rising while the screen fills with effects.

Thumb placement changes the difficulty

On a phone, steering and a handbrake may need to be used together. Check whether the buttons are far enough apart to avoid accidental presses and close enough to reach comfortably. If controls can be moved or sensitivity adjusted, that can help accommodate different devices and hands.

A wide screenshot is not enough. Watch someone use the layout in actual play, especially during a quick correction. If the same thumb must repeatedly leave steering to perform another essential action, the control scheme may demand a rhythm you do not enjoy. There is no universal best layout; comfort matters more than matching another player's settings.

Score chasing and free driving reward different things

A dedicated drift challenge may reward angle, duration or maintaining a chain. Free driving may make a slide useful simply because it helps a sharp turn feel expressive. Decide whether you want to optimise a score or enjoy occasional handbrake turns while travelling.

For score-based play, read what breaks a chain and whether those rules are visible. For free roaming, check how a failed slide affects the rest of your trip. A harmless spin can be funny in a sandbox and costly in a delivery job. The surrounding activity changes the meaning of the same handling mechanic.

What Craze City has shown so far

Craze City's development writing describes arcade driving with a handbrake that swings the rear of the car. That is a driving behaviour, not a promise of a dedicated drift championship or a detailed drift scoring system. The street-racing guide covers the event side separately.

The actual public driving image shows a scooter and mobile controls, so it should not be used as proof of a car's drift angle. Craze City is still prelaunch. If drifting is your main reason to choose a game, wait for an uncut car-handling demonstration or inspect a released game's official gameplay before committing. The arcade driving guide covers steering and recovery without assuming a dedicated drift score system.

Where Craze City fits

Craze City’s development direction includes arcade handbrake driving. The game is prelaunch, and this page does not announce a dedicated drift mode, tuning garage or scoring ladder. Its scooter capture provides city-driving context rather than a car-drifting demonstration.

Quick questions

Does tyre smoke prove a game has a drift system?

No. Smoke may be a visual effect. Look for controllable slide angle, correction and recovery, and check separately whether the game awards a drift score.

Is a drifting game comfortable on every phone layout?

Not necessarily. Button placement, screen size and sensitivity can change the experience. Try the controls on your own device when possible rather than relying only on a trailer.
